경계: Upside-down the Horizon is a memorial-space proposal for the Sewol ferry, presented as an exhibition design at the Imperial War Museum, London, in 2018. The proposal sites a permanent memorial near Paengmok Harbor — close to the waters where the ferry sank — and places the recovered hull at its center.

The Sewol disaster occurred on the morning of April 16, 2014, when a passenger ferry bound from Incheon to Jeju capsized and sank off the coast of Jindo, in South Jeolla. Of the 476 people on board — including students from Danwon High School — only 172 were rescued. 304 lives were lost.

The hull itself remains the only medium that can carry the historical weight of what happened. The proposal is to preserve the hull as it is, set apart from any surrounding facility, and to view it inverted through a surface of water — the horizon of the sea above and the wreck below, mirrored so the eye encounters the boat as it last was. A diving bell connects to the hull and allows visitors to send their voices into the interior, toward those who remained inside.

The project is, in the end, a proposal to hold a memory in space rather than in language — a boundary where above and below, presence and absence, are kept just close enough for the visitor to register both at once.

세월호 참사는 상식의 부정이다.

2014년 4월 16일 오전 8시 50분, 인천에서 출발해 제주로 향하던 여객선 세월호는 전라남도 진도군 조도면 부근 해상에서 전복되어 침몰합니다. 단원고등학교 학생을 비롯한 탑승자 총 476명 중 172명만이 구조되었고, 304명의 희생자가 발생했습니다.

선체는 이 비극적 참사의 역사적 무게와 경각심을 담아낼 수 있는 유일한 매개체입니다. 따라서 주변 환경 시설과 분리된 독립된 공간으로 선체를 보존하고, 수면에 역전(逆轉)된 선체를 통해 회상하게 합니다. 그리고 선체에 연결된 다이빙 벨을 통해 방문자가 세월호에, 아직 그 안에 남아 있는 이들에게 자신의 목소리를 전하게 합니다 .

이 작업은 결국 기억을 언어가 아닌 공간으로 붙드는 일에 관한 제안입니다. 위와 아래, 존재와 부재가, 방문자가 둘을 동시에 인식할 수 있을 만큼만 가까이 놓이는, 하나의 경계.
