Cafe Aesop

Cafe Aesop is a cafe in Yangju, north of Seoul, designed around a simple brief: a place to chill. Not chill as in stylish — chill as in actually slow down. A room people would happily lose an afternoon in.

The material palette holds two registers in tension. Concrete, epoxy, brick, and a cement-based mix carry the raw, industrial side; wallpaper threads a softer texture through the room so it never tips into workshop territory. The brick walls do most of the warming, holding their heat through afternoon light. Epoxy floors stay easy underfoot and easy on staff.

The plan is loose by design. Several seating clusters of different scales sit across the room, none dominant, so guests choose the corner that fits their mood rather than the one the layout assigns them. There is no single center; the room rewards wandering.

Cafe Aesop is, in the end, a project about ease — a room that asks nothing of its guests, only offers them somewhere to sit for a while.

카페 이솝은 경기도 양주, 서울 북쪽의 한 자리에 있는 카페입니다. 브리프는 단순했습니다 — 쉴 수 있는 곳. 멋있게 쉬는 게 아니라 정말로 속도를 늦추는, 한 오후를 기꺼이 잃어버려도 좋을 그런 자리.

물성은 두 결을 동시에 품습니다. 콘크리트, 에폭시, 브릭, 시멘트 믹스가 거칠고 산업적인 쪽을 담당하고, 그 위로 벽지가 부드러운 결을 한 겹 얹어 공간이 작업장처럼 읽히지 않도록 잡아줍니다. 브릭 벽은 오후의 빛을 받아내며 공간의 온도를 만들고, 솔리드 에폭시 바닥은 공간에 차분한 감도를 만들어 줍니다.

공간은 의도적으로 느슨합니다. 크기가 다른 좌석 클러스터 여러 개가 방 곳곳에 흩어져 있고, 그중 어느 하나도 중심을 차지하지 않습니다. 손님이 빈자리에 앉는 것이 아니라 그날의 기분에 맞는 구석을 고를 수 있도록. 중심이 없는 대신 한 번 둘러보고 싶어지는 공간입니다.

카페 이솝은 결국 편안함에 관한 프로젝트입니다. 손님에게 무언가를 요구하지 않는 방, 그저 한참 머물 수 있는 자리를 내어주는 방.
