Choahnsan Project

Choahnsan Project is the work submitted for the MMCA Changdong Residency in the first half of 2018. Choahnsan is a small mountain in the middle of Seoul, where the city's edges and the wild edges meet without a clear seam — and the project takes that seam as its subject.

For thirty days, a paper shelter built from Tyvek and timber stood on the mountain, and the artist lived and worked inside it. The shelter was both an architectural experiment and a stage — thin enough to register changes in light, weather, and sound, visible enough to expose the daily life and practice of an artist and designer to anyone walking by.

The project asks what an in-between space — neither nature nor urban, both at once — does to the senses when a person stays in it long enough to notice. The record of those thirty days is what the work documents.

초안산 프로젝트는 2018년 상반기 국립현대미술관 창동 레지던시에 출품된 작업입니다. 초안산은 서울 한복판의 작은 산으로, 도심의 가장자리와 자연의 가장자리가 또렷한 경계 없이 맞닿는 자리입니다. 본 프로젝트는 그 경계 자체를 작업의 주제로 삼습니다.

타이벡과 목재로 제작된 종이 쉘터를 산 위에 세우고, 작가가 30일 동안 그 안에서 머물며 작업했습니다. 쉘터는 빛과 날씨, 소리의 변화를 그대로 받아내는 얇은 구조이자, 작가와 디자이너의 일상과 작업을 산을 지나는 누구에게나 드러내는 무대이기도 했습니다. 건축적 실험이자 동시에 한 폭의 화폭으로 작동하는 구조.

본 프로젝트는 자연도 도시도 아닌, 그 사이의 공간이 사람의 감각에 어떤 변화를 만드는지를 묻습니다. 30일의 기록이 이 작업의 결과입니다.
