Palladian Times is a conceptual video work based on Chiswick House, a Palladian-style historic building in Chiswick Park, London. The piece analyzes the historic legacy of the architecture, traces its design back to its proportional origins, and overlays time — the value the building has accumulated in the present — onto those origins. The work is, in that sense, a process of recovering the legacy's original value.
The most defining quality of a Palladian building is its proportional system — the ratios that govern every element of the architecture. Working from research into those proportions, the video translates them into movement, substituting the building's most precious value into a contemporary medium. What emerges is a visualization of what the building can still give us now, decoded from what it has always been.
Palladian Times는 런던 치즈윅 파크에 자리한 영국의 대표적 팔라디안 양식 건축물 — 치즈윅 하우스(Chiswick House) — 를 기반으로 한 개념적 영상 작업입니다. 역사적 유산을 분석해 그 디자인의 기원을 역으로 발견하고, 현재에 덧붙여진 가치인 '시간'을 그 위에 합일합니다. 결국 유산이 본래 지니고 있던 가치를 다시 길어 올리는 과정에 관한 작업입니다팔라디안 양식의 건축이 가장 중요하게 두는 것은 건물을 구성하는 비례입니다. 본 영상은 치즈윅 하우스의 형태적 비례를 분석한 연구를 바탕으로, 그 비례를 움직임(movement)으로 치환합니다. 건축물이 가졌던 가장 귀한 가치를 동시대의 매체로 옮겨놓는 작업이며, 그 결과는 그 건축이 지금 우리에게 줄 수 있는 가치의 시각화입니다.
