Smida Coffee Roasters

Smida is a cafe and roastery in Namyangju, on the eastern edge of Gyeonggi-do, built for a roaster who wanted the working side of coffee — sourcing, roasting, brewing — visible from the moment you walk in. The brief was less about styling a cafe than about housing a process.

The material palette reflects that. Concrete, linen, timber, wood stain, and a cement-based mix bind the floors and counters into a single tactile language: industrial enough to read as a workshop, warm enough to read as a place to stay. Exposed concrete sets the temperature of the room from above; wood at the counter and seating brings it back.

The plan splits across two volumes. The front holds the bar and seating, where guests sit with a cup. Deeper inside, a roasting room sits not as back-of-house but as the engine of the cafe, framed so the work is part of what the guest sees. Small brass accents, kept restrained, give the otherwise quiet surfaces something to catch the light against.

Smida is, in the end, an argument for treating roasting as part of the room — a contemporary coffee maker that wants the craft, not just the cup, in front of the guest.

스미다 커피 로스터스는 경기도 남양주에 자리한 카페이자 로스터리입니다. 원두 소싱부터 로스팅·브루잉까지 커피의 작업 과정을 손님이 들어선 순간부터 자연스럽게 마주하길 바랐던 로스터의 의뢰로 시작된 프로젝트로, 브리프는 카페를 스타일링하기보다 하나의 과정을 어떻게 담아낼지에 가까웠습니다.

물성도 그 결을 따릅니다. 콘크리트, 리넨, 팀버, 우드 스테인, 시멘트 믹스가 바닥과 카운터를 하나의 촉감으로 묶어냅니다. 노출 콘크리트가 천장의 온도를 정하고, 카운터와 좌석에 들어선 목재가 그 온도를 다시 끌어올립니다. 작업장처럼 읽히면서도 머물고 싶은 자리로 읽히는, 그 사이의 공간.

평면은 두 영역으로 나뉩니다. 앞쪽은 바와 좌석으로, 손님이 한 잔을 마주하는 자리. 안쪽으로 더 깊이 들어가면 로스팅 룸이 자리합니다. 백오피스가 아닌, 카페를 구동시키는 엔진처럼 손님의 시선 안에 놓입니다. 작게 점찍힌 황동 디테일은 절제된 표면이 빛을 받아낼 자리를 만들어 줍니다.

스미다는 결국 로스팅을 공간의 일부로 다루자는 제안입니다. 한 잔의 커피가 아니라 그것을 만드는 과정 자체를 손님 앞에 두고자 하는, 컨템포러리 커피 메이커의 자리.
