Cafe Sming Studio

Sming Studio is a cafe and event space in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, designed for a brand that regularly hosts fan meetings — small concerts, listening parties, the kind of gathering that wants the energy of a venue without losing the intimacy of a cafe. The brief asked for one room that could carry both modes without rearranging itself each time.

The material palette is industrial by intent: concrete, solid epoxy, punching metal, paint, and a cement-based mix. Perforated metal panels frame the walls and ceiling, lending the room the acoustic and visual texture of a small venue. Epoxy floors take a beating from foot traffic and reset easily. Paint and cement keep the surfaces matte, so light reads as light rather than reflection.

The plan is one continuous room. By day, it's a cafe — counter, seating, daylight. By event, the same room holds a stage. The transition is quiet, made by reorienting attention rather than rearranging architecture.

Sming Studio is, in the end, a project about flexibility without compromise — a cafe that can host a hundred fans without ever stopping being a cafe.

스밍 스튜디오는 서울 성수동에 자리한 카페이자 이벤트 공간입니다. 팬미팅과 작은 공연, 청음회 같은 이벤트를 정기적으로 여는 브랜드의 의뢰로 진행된 프로젝트로, 베뉴의 에너지와 카페의 친밀함을 동시에 갖춘 한 공간을 만드는 것이 브리프였습니다. 가구를 매번 옮기지 않고도 두 가지 모드를 모두 받쳐주는 방.

물성은 의도적으로 산업적입니다. 콘크리트, 솔리드 에폭시, 펀칭 메탈, 페인트, 시멘트 믹스. 펀칭 메탈 패널이 벽과 천장을 둘러 작은 베뉴의 시각적·음향적 결을 만들어냅니다. 에폭시 바닥은 사람 발길을 충분히 받아내고도 쉽게 정리되며, 페인트와 시멘트 마감은 표면을 무광으로 잡아 빛이 빛 그대로 읽히게 합니다.

평면은 끊김 없는 하나의 방입니다. 낮에는 카운터와 좌석, 자연광이 채우는 카페로. 이벤트 때는 같은 공간이 무대를 품습니다. 전환은 조용하게, 건축을 바꾸기보다 시선의 방향을 다시 잡는 방식으로 일어납니다.

스밍 스튜디오는 결국 타협 없는 유연함에 관한 프로젝트입니다. 백 명의 팬을 받아내는 동안에도 카페로서의 결을 잃지 않는, 그런 카페.
